Green Point packs a stadium, a big urban park, the Metropolitan golf course and dense streets of flats, guesthouses and Victorian semis into one small slice of the Atlantic Seaboard. Lots of people, lots of restaurants and lots of open lawn means rats, cockroaches and Egyptian geese all feel at home.
Green Point: what drives rodents here
Rats work the lanes behind Main Road restaurants and nest in basements and bin rooms of apartment blocks. Roof rats climb along cables and creepers into the roofs of the Victorian terraces.
Along Main Road and the side streets climbing toward Signal Hill you get Victorian and Edwardian terraces with timber floors and pressed-metal ceilings, plus newer apartment blocks with basements and shared bin rooms. Guesthouses and short-stay apartments turn over guests constantly. Restaurants along Main Road and Somerset Road share back lanes and service ducts with the flats above, and that is where German cockroaches and rats move between businesses and homes.
The suburb runs from the lower slopes of Signal Hill down to the Green Point Common, with Green Point Urban Park and Cape Town Stadium on the flat land toward Mouille Point. The park's lawns, wetland features and ponds draw Egyptian geese and gulls, and the sea air keeps corners damp. Old stormwater drains run downhill toward the coast, giving rats and big drain roaches a network under the streets.
Rats in bin rooms, back lanes and roof spaces lead the list, with German cockroaches close behind in restaurants and older flats. Egyptian geese foul lawns and pool areas near the park and golf course. Bed bugs are a real issue in short-stay rentals and guesthouses.
Something most people miss
Mice do not need to drink much water, because they get most of it from their food. That is why they can live happily in a dry pantry.
When we arrive for mice, the first place we check is behind the stove and under the sink. Those two spots explain most kitchen infestations.
How to tell you have a problem
- Nibbled corners of cereal boxes, bread bags and pet food packets.
- A sharp, ammonia-like smell inside closed cupboards.
- Shredded paper, fabric or insulation bundled into a nest in a hidden corner.
- Small droppings about the size of a grain of rice in drawers, cupboards and along skirtings.
Mice urinate constantly as they move, which contaminates food, crockery and work surfaces. They can carry salmonella and other bacteria into kitchen areas, which is a real problem for food businesses and homes with babies. They chew through wiring behind appliances and inside walls, and they ruin stored linen, paperwork and books. Because a female mouse can have a new litter every few weeks, a couple of mice quickly becomes a cupboard full.
How the treatment works
We start by finding where they get in and where they nest, which is usually a gap behind the stove, around a geyser pipe or under a kitchen unit. Indoors we mainly use snap traps and enclosed traps placed along the walls, because mice run close to edges and are curious enough to investigate. Where baiting is needed, it goes inside tamper-resistant stations that children and pets cannot open, after a bait risk assessment. We then seal the entry points with steel wool, mesh and sealant, because mice can squeeze through a hole about the width of a pencil. A follow-up visit checks the traps and confirms the activity has stopped.

Prevention that actually works
- Move cereal, pasta, rice and pet food into hard plastic or glass containers with good lids.
- Do not leave pet food out overnight in the kitchen.
- Seal the gaps where pipes and cables come through walls, especially under the sink.
- Keep the garage tidy, since boxes on the floor make perfect mouse nests.
- Pull the stove and fridge out once in a while and clean the crumbs and grease behind them.
Pricing, honestly
The price depends on how many rooms are affected, how long the mice have been there and how many gaps need sealing. A single kitchen is quicker than a whole house with mice in the walls and the garage. Follow-up visits are usually included, and the quote is free.
Mice move indoors when Cape Town's winter rains and colder nights start, usually from late April, and the numbers stay high until spring. In the Boland, harvest time and ploughing can push field mice towards farm buildings too.
Frequently asked questions
Do you come out to Green Point for mouse control?
Yes. Green Point is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Mouille Point, Three Anchor Bay, Sea Point, De Waterkant. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
How do I keep Egyptian geese off my Green Point lawn and pool?
Bird deterrents, netting over pools when not in use and removing easy grazing areas all help. We can look at your property and suggest what will work best.
How do mice get into the house?
Through tiny gaps around pipes, under doors, through air vents and roof edges. A gap the width of a pencil is enough.
Are ultrasonic repellers worth it?
In our experience they do not solve a mouse problem. Mice get used to the sound quickly.
How long does mouse control take?
Most homes are clear in two to three weeks once the traps are set and the gaps are sealed.
Can you treat a Green Point guesthouse for bed bugs between bookings?
Yes, after-hours and weekend visits are available on request. We inspect, treat affected rooms and give you a post-treatment report.
