Mosquito Control for Hout Bay homes and businesses

Planning an outdoor function in Hout Bay this summer? Think about mosquitoes before the guests do. Mosquitoes in Cape Town are mostly a sleep-wrecking nuisance rather than a disease risk, and nearly all of them breed within a short flight of where they bite you. We find and treat the standing water they breed in, treat the shady spots where adults rest, and give you a practical plan to keep numbers down through summer.

Hout Bay is a valley town with a working harbour at one end and horse paddocks and leafy plots further up. Fishing boats, stables, a river and mountain on three sides make for a wider mix of pests than most Atlantic Seaboard suburbs.

Hout Bay: what drives biting insects here

Fleas and ticks come with dogs that walk the beach and mountain trails. Horse owners also deal with biting flies in the stables.

The valley is ringed by the Karbonkelberg, the Sentinel, Chapman's Peak and the back of Table Mountain, with the Disa River running down to the beach. Winter rain is heavy and the valley floor stays damp. The harbour, the river mouth and the paddocks all feed flies, gulls and rodents.

Housing ranges from big family homes on large plots in the upper valley, to townhouse complexes, holiday homes near the beach and older cottages closer to the harbour. Many homes have thatched lapas, timber decks and outbuildings. Stables, workshops and harbour-side warehouses and fish processing buildings carry their own rodent and fly problems.

Rats around the harbour and along the river, flies near stables, and mosquitoes near the river and wetland areas are typical. Wasps, scorpions and spiders come with the mountain and garden setting. Cockroaches are more common in the harbour precinct and restaurants.

From the technician

A common myth is that mosquitoes breed only in big bodies of water. In practice, a bottle cap of water in a pot-plant saucer or a sagging gutter is enough to produce a steady supply right next to your bedroom.

The south-easter is not all bad news. Mosquitoes struggle to fly in strong wind, so windy Cape Town days are often bite-free, and the worst nights come when the wind drops.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Swarms in the evening near a water feature, drain or neglected pool.
  2. A high-pitched whine near your ear just as you fall asleep.
  3. Small dark mosquitoes resting on shaded walls, under the eaves or behind curtains during the day.
  4. Itchy, raised bites on arms, face and feet that were left outside the covers.
  5. Wriggling larvae, sometimes called wigglers, in pond edges, buckets, bird baths or pool covers.

In the Western Cape, mosquitoes are mainly a nuisance and are not a malaria risk, but the bites can cause swelling and itching that is worse in children and some adults. Scratched bites can become infected, and constant night-time biting leads to poor sleep for the whole household. For hospitality businesses, restaurants with outdoor seating and wedding venues, mosquitoes in the evening can directly affect guest comfort and reviews.

Our process, step by step

Source reduction always comes first: we walk the property and find every place water collects, from gutters and drains to ponds, water features, plant saucers and covered pools, and tell you which ones to empty, fix or cover. Water that cannot be removed, such as ponds and drains, can be treated with a larvicide or insect growth regulator that stops larvae becoming adults. Adult mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded places during the day, so we apply a residual spray to the undersides of shrubs, hedges, eaves, patio ceilings and other resting areas. For events or heavy problems, ULV fogging can knock down adult numbers quickly, but it only works properly when combined with dealing with the breeding sites.

Prevention that actually works

  • Store old tyres, tins and containers under cover or throw them away.
  • Keep pool water circulating and treated, and drain the water that collects on top of pool covers.
  • Fit mosquito screens to bedroom windows and use a net over cots in summer.
  • Clean gutters after winter so they do not hold water through summer.
  • Stock ornamental ponds with small fish that eat larvae, and keep water features running.
Local tip for Hout BayIf you keep horses, clear manure every day and keep the heap well away from the house. It is the single biggest fly breeding site in the valley.

What affects the price

Cost depends on the size of the property, how many breeding sites there are and whether larger water bodies such as ponds or drains need treating. A once-off treatment is priced differently from a programme of visits through the summer season. Fogging for an event is quoted on the size of the area, and the quote itself is free.

Most mosquito problems on a normal suburban property can be cut dramatically by the owner just by emptying standing water every week. Plug-in repellents and sprays help you sleep, but they do nothing about where the mosquitoes come from. Call a professional when the breeding site is something you cannot fix yourself, like a large pond, a blocked drain or a neighbouring property, or when you need numbers down for an event.

Mosquito Control questions from Hout Bay

Is there a malaria risk in Cape Town?

No, the Western Cape is not a malaria area. Mosquitoes here are a nuisance and cause itchy bites, but the main concern is comfort and sleep.

Are the treatments safe for fish in my pond?

We choose larvicides suitable for the situation and will tell you if a product is not appropriate for a fish pond. In many cases, fish themselves are the best control.

Can you check a thatched lapa in Hout Bay for borer?

Yes. We inspect the thatch poles and timber for borer activity and can treat if needed, and we can include it in a beetle certificate inspection when you sell.

Do you come out to Hout Bay for mosquito control?

Yes. Hout Bay is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Imizamo Yethu, Llandudno, Constantia, Camps Bay. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Why are there so many flies in Hout Bay in summer?

The stables, paddocks and harbour all give flies breeding material, and warm summer weather speeds that up. Removing manure and fish waste quickly, plus fly control around the stables, makes a big difference.

Why are there so many mosquitoes this summer?

Usually because a wet winter left more standing water, or a breeding site has developed close by, such as a blocked gutter or an untreated pond.
