Electric City is a tight grid of family homes on the Blue Downs side of the Cape Flats, where most yards hold a main house, a backyard room and a washing line within a few metres of the boundary wall. A rat problem here is rarely one household's problem, so we usually end up talking to the neighbours as well.
The local picture in Electric City
Most flea calls start with a dog that sleeps outside on the sand, then the fleas move indoors onto carpets and couches. Bed bugs usually arrive in second-hand mattresses or furniture, so check seams before bringing anything home.
This is flat, deep Cape Flats sand, the kind that drains fast in summer and then turns soggy in low spots once the winter fronts arrive. Summer wind lifts litter and sand into corners against walls, which is exactly where rats like to dig. Open veld strips and stormwater ponds on the edges of the Blue Downs area give rodents somewhere to live between raids on the houses.
The original houses are small brick units, and over the years most have grown sideways and backwards with extra rooms, carports and wendy houses. Every add-on leaves a join between old and new roof sheeting, and those joins are where roof rats and pigeons find their way in. Wendy houses sitting straight on sand give rats a dry floor to tunnel beneath. With walls almost touching, a cockroach colony in one kitchen does not take long to reach the next.
Norway rats burrowing under outbuildings are the call we take most, with mice a close second once it gets cold. Kitchens in older units often carry German cockroaches that have been there through several tenants. In summer it turns to fleas, house flies at the bins and ants marching across the stoep.
Worth knowing
When our technician arrives, the first thing they check is the gutters. Blocked gutters full of leaves hold water for weeks after rain and are one of the most overlooked breeding sites in Cape Town homes.
How to tell you have a problem
- Day-time bites on the ankles while sitting in the garden, which points to Aedes breeding nearby.
- Small dark mosquitoes resting on shaded walls, under the eaves or behind curtains during the day.
- Swarms in the evening near a water feature, drain or neglected pool.
- Wriggling larvae, sometimes called wigglers, in pond edges, buckets, bird baths or pool covers.
Our process, step by step
Source reduction always comes first: we walk the property and find every place water collects, from gutters and drains to ponds, water features, plant saucers and covered pools, and tell you which ones to empty, fix or cover. Water that cannot be removed, such as ponds and drains, can be treated with a larvicide or insect growth regulator that stops larvae becoming adults. Adult mosquitoes rest in cool, shaded places during the day, so we apply a residual spray to the undersides of shrubs, hedges, eaves, patio ceilings and other resting areas. For events or heavy problems, ULV fogging can knock down adult numbers quickly, but it only works properly when combined with dealing with the breeding sites.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Store old tyres, tins and containers under cover or throw them away.
- Empty pot-plant saucers, buckets, bird baths and pet water bowls at least once a week, because larvae develop into adults in about a week in hot weather.
- Clean gutters after winter so they do not hold water through summer.
- Stock ornamental ponds with small fish that eat larvae, and keep water features running.
- Keep pool water circulating and treated, and drain the water that collects on top of pool covers.
What affects the price
Cost depends on the size of the property, how many breeding sites there are and whether larger water bodies such as ponds or drains need treating. A once-off treatment is priced differently from a programme of visits through the summer season. Fogging for an event is quoted on the size of the area, and the quote itself is free.
Most mosquito problems on a normal suburban property can be cut dramatically by the owner just by emptying standing water every week. Plug-in repellents and sprays help you sleep, but they do nothing about where the mosquitoes come from. Call a professional when the breeding site is something you cannot fix yourself, like a large pond, a blocked drain or a neighbouring property, or when you need numbers down for an event.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the rats keep coming back to my Electric City yard after I bait?
Usually because the neighbouring yards are untreated, so new rats move into the space yours left. Treating a few adjoining homes at once breaks that cycle.
Do you come out to Electric City for mosquito control?
Yes. Electric City is part of our regular Cape Flats route, along with Kuils River, Delft, Belhar. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Does fogging get rid of mosquitoes?
Fogging kills adults that are flying at the time, but new ones will hatch from any untreated water. It works best as part of a plan that deals with breeding sites.
Why are there so many mosquitoes this summer?
Usually because a wet winter left more standing water, or a breeding site has developed close by, such as a blocked gutter or an untreated pond.
Are the treatments safe for fish in my pond?
We choose larvicides suitable for the situation and will tell you if a product is not appropriate for a fish pond. In many cases, fish themselves are the best control.
Is it rats or mice in my ceiling in Electric City?
Rat droppings are about the size of a raisin and mouse droppings look like grains of rice. WhatsApp us a photo and we will tell you which you are dealing with.
