Plattekloof sits high on the Tygerberg Hills above the N1, so most of our calls here are about pests coming in from the hillside rather than from neighbours. Big gardens, open veld on the ridge and a busy office node lower down give it a mix of household and commercial work.
Biting insects around Plattekloof
Fleas are the usual problem in homes with dogs that use the garden and veld trails. Bed bugs are uncommon but turn up after travel.
The suburb runs up the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills, with Tygerberg Nature Reserve and undeveloped veld not far off. Winters are wet and windy, summers hot and dry, and the ridge catches the full force of the South-Easter. That mix pushes insects and rodents indoors when the first cold fronts arrive.
Most homes are large, freestanding family houses from the 1970s onwards, with tiled roofs, double garages and a fair number of pools. There are also townhouse complexes and the office parks off Plattekloof Road. The bigger houses have plenty of roof void and garage storage, which is where rodents and cockroaches settle in unnoticed. Office blocks and their kitchens need regular scheduled checks rather than once-off sprays.
How to tell you have a problem
- Pale specks and debris in the corners of the dog basket or along the edges of rugs.
- Black, pepper-like specks in pet fur or bedding that turn reddish when pressed on damp white paper.
- Itchy bites in small clusters around the ankles and lower legs.
- Pets scratching, biting at their back or losing fur near the base of the tail.
- Tiny dark insects jumping onto white socks when you walk across the carpet.
A note from the field
Only around one in twenty fleas in a typical infestation is an adult on the animal. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment, which is why spot-on treatments alone often fail.
How the treatment works
A proper flea job hits every life stage, not just the adults. We use an insect growth regulator, which stops eggs and larvae developing into breeding adults, together with a residual insecticide on carpets, floors, under furniture and around pet resting places, both inside and in sheltered outdoor spots. Before we arrive, you vacuum thoroughly, wash pet bedding hot and lift items off the floor so the product reaches where the larvae live. The pets must be treated by your vet on the same day or just before, otherwise new fleas keep arriving. Because pupae are protected in their cocoons, we often book a follow-up treatment a couple of weeks later to catch the late hatchers.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Keep the grass short and rake away leaf litter in shaded spots where the dog lies outside.
- Before moving into a rental or newly bought home, ask whether the previous occupants had pets, and consider a treatment before the furniture goes in.
- Deal with rats or mice in the roof promptly, as their fleas can drop into the house.
- Discourage stray cats from sleeping under the house, on the stoep or in the garage.
- Keep every pet in the house on a vet-recommended flea product all year round, because heated homes keep fleas breeding through winter.
How much will it cost?
The main factors are the size of the house, how much carpet and soft furnishing there is, and whether outdoor areas need treating as well. A heavy infestation in a multi-pet home will usually need a follow-up visit, which we include in the quote. Preparation on your side makes a big difference to how well a single treatment works, and we give a free quote upfront.
If you have one pet and caught it early, a good vet product plus serious vacuuming and washing will often sort it out. Once you have fleas jumping on people and multiple rooms involved, foggers and shop sprays rarely reach the larvae in carpet bases, and a professional treatment with a growth regulator is the faster route. Either way, the house treatment fails if the animals are not treated by the vet at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Can you service the office parks in Plattekloof after hours?
Yes, after-hours and weekend visits can be arranged on request so staff are not disturbed. We leave a post-treatment report so building managers have a record.
Should I vacuum after the treatment?
Yes, but wait until the day after. Vacuuming encourages pupae to hatch and removes eggs, and it does not undo the treatment.
Is there a guarantee?
Our treatments carry a minimum 3-month guarantee, provided the pets are kept on vet flea treatment as advised.
Why do I get more mice in Plattekloof when it starts raining?
The first cold fronts flush mice out of the veld on the hill and they head for warm roofs and garages. Proofing entry points in April and May usually stops the seasonal wave.
Why do I still see fleas after the treatment?
Pupae in their cocoons are protected and keep hatching for up to two or three weeks, and those new fleas then die on contact with the treated surfaces. Keep vacuuming, and call us if numbers are not dropping after that period.
Do you come out to Plattekloof for flea control?
Yes. Plattekloof is part of our regular Northern Suburbs route, along with Panorama, Parow, Monte Vista, Goodwood. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
