Langa is the oldest township in Cape Town and one of the most densely lived-in, bordered by the N2, Vanguard Drive and the railway. When homes, hostels and informal structures sit close together, a pest problem rarely stays in one house, so we look at the whole block rather than a single room.
The local picture in Langa
Bed bugs and fleas are common where people share rooms and mattresses. They are treatable, but every bed and couch in the room has to be done together.
Langa sits on flat Cape Flats sand with stormwater channels and the Epping industrial area close by. Winter rain can pool on open ground and in low streets, and the drainage lines along the edges hold water long enough for mosquitoes to breed. The South-Easter carries litter and dust across open plots in summer.
You'll find old hostel blocks, council flats and family homes alongside newer formal housing and informal structures. Shared walls and roofs mean rats, cockroaches and bed bugs move easily from one unit to the next. Backyard rooms are common, and many households store food and goods in them, which draws rodents.
A note from the field
Only around one in twenty fleas in a typical infestation is an adult on the animal. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment, which is why spot-on treatments alone often fail.
People often say fleas cannot survive without a pet in the house. Adult fleas need a host, but pupae can sit in a carpet for weeks or months and hatch the moment they sense someone walking past.
How to tell you have a problem
- Black, pepper-like specks in pet fur or bedding that turn reddish when pressed on damp white paper.
- Itchy bites in small clusters around the ankles and lower legs.
- Tiny dark insects jumping onto white socks when you walk across the carpet.
- Pets scratching, biting at their back or losing fur near the base of the tail.
- Bites appearing in a house that has been empty for a while, or just after moving in.
- Pale specks and debris in the corners of the dog basket or along the edges of rugs.
What happens when we come out
A proper flea job hits every life stage, not just the adults. We use an insect growth regulator, which stops eggs and larvae developing into breeding adults, together with a residual insecticide on carpets, floors, under furniture and around pet resting places, both inside and in sheltered outdoor spots. Before we arrive, you vacuum thoroughly, wash pet bedding hot and lift items off the floor so the product reaches where the larvae live. The pets must be treated by your vet on the same day or just before, otherwise new fleas keep arriving. Because pupae are protected in their cocoons, we often book a follow-up treatment a couple of weeks later to catch the late hatchers.

Prevention that actually works
- Deal with rats or mice in the roof promptly, as their fleas can drop into the house.
- Before moving into a rental or newly bought home, ask whether the previous occupants had pets, and consider a treatment before the furniture goes in.
- Keep the grass short and rake away leaf litter in shaded spots where the dog lies outside.
- Wash pet bedding on a hot cycle every week or two and vacuum the areas where pets sleep.
- Discourage stray cats from sleeping under the house, on the stoep or in the garage.
What affects the price
The main factors are the size of the house, how much carpet and soft furnishing there is, and whether outdoor areas need treating as well. A heavy infestation in a multi-pet home will usually need a follow-up visit, which we include in the quote. Preparation on your side makes a big difference to how well a single treatment works, and we give a free quote upfront.
If you have one pet and caught it early, a good vet product plus serious vacuuming and washing will often sort it out. Once you have fleas jumping on people and multiple rooms involved, foggers and shop sprays rarely reach the larvae in carpet bases, and a professional treatment with a growth regulator is the faster route. Either way, the house treatment fails if the animals are not treated by the vet at the same time.
Questions we get asked in Langa
Can fleas live on people?
Cat fleas bite people but do not live on us; they need a furry host to breed. If there is no pet in the house, a rodent problem or a previous occupant's animal is usually the source.
Do you come out to Langa for flea control?
Yes. Langa is part of our regular Cape Flats route, along with Pinelands, Bonteheuwel, Gugulethu, Athlone. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Do you treat my dog or cat?
No, pets must be treated by your vet. We treat the house and garden, and both need to happen together for the job to work.
Why do the rats keep coming back to my house in Langa?
Usually because the neighbours' homes and the open ground around still have food and shelter, so new rats move in. Treating several houses in a row together, and clearing rubble nearby, keeps them away much longer.
Is there a guarantee?
Our treatments carry a minimum 3-month guarantee, provided the pets are kept on vet flea treatment as advised.
Can you treat bed bugs in a hostel room or backyard room?
Yes. We treat the beds, mattresses, furniture and cracks in the walls, and we'll explain what to wash and how to prepare the room so the treatment works.
