Fishmoth Control in Capri Village

Capri is a quiet residential pocket on the Kommetjie side of the valley between Fish Hoek and Noordhoek, with fynbos slopes on one side and the wetlands of the valley floor on the other. Most of what we treat here wanders in from that wild edge: mice, rats, spiders, the odd scorpion and plenty of mosquitoes in a wet spring.

Crawling insects in Capri Village: what we see

Rain spiders, button spiders and sac spiders turn up indoors regularly, and scorpions hide under logs and garden pots. Argentine ants trail into kitchens after the first winter rain, while fishmoths settle in damp cupboards.

Homes are mainly freestanding family houses from the 1980s onward, many with timber decks, wooden window frames and a few with thatched lapas or outbuildings. Gardens are big and often run straight into natural bush, so there is no real buffer between the veld and the house. Garages, workshops and Wendy houses on these plots are favourite spots for rodents to nest over winter.

The valley floor between Fish Hoek and Noordhoek used to be a sea channel, and it still holds wetlands and vleis that fill in winter. Fynbos slopes rise behind the houses, and the mountain fires that come through every few years drive rodents and insects downhill into gardens. The South-Easter funnels up the valley in summer, while the north-wester brings rain from May to August.

Rodents from the surrounding bush are the most common call, especially after a wet winter or a fire on the mountain. Mosquitoes from the wetlands are a big spring and summer complaint. Spiders, scorpions and ants come in from the garden, and wood borer is worth watching on timber and thatch.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Shed scales and skins collect in drawers, cupboards and bathroom corners.
  2. Fishmoths drop from the ceiling or come out of light fittings and cornices, a sign they are living in the roof space.
  3. Irregular grazed patches or small holes appear on book covers, wallpaper or photographs.
  4. Silvery, fast-moving insects are seen when you lift boxes, books or linen.
  5. Clothing, curtains or linen made from cotton, linen or silk have small holes or thinned patches.

A note from the field

Landlords with older rental properties often get fishmoth complaints from tenants. A roof void treatment and better ventilation in the bathroom usually solves it for the long term.

Our process, step by step

Fishmoths often live in roof spaces, wall voids and behind cornices, so a fine insecticidal dust blown into the ceiling void is one of our most effective tools. Inside, we apply a targeted residual treatment into cracks, cupboard corners, skirting gaps and behind bookshelves rather than spraying open surfaces. Fishmoths are long-lived and lay eggs in hidden cracks, so treatments that keep working for a while are more useful than a quick knockdown. We pair the treatment with advice on damp, ventilation and storage, because changing the conditions is what stops them coming back.

Prevention that actually works

  • Seal cracks around skirting boards, cornices and built-in cupboards where they hide and lay eggs.
  • Vacuum regularly inside cupboards, along skirting boards and behind furniture to remove eggs and food sources.
  • Improve ventilation in bathrooms and laundries with an extractor fan or by keeping a window open after showers.
  • Avoid stacking old newspapers, magazines and cardboard boxes in cupboards for long periods.
  • Store books, documents and photographs in sealed plastic boxes, not cardboard, especially in garages and storerooms.
Local tip for Capri VillageEmpty pot plant saucers, birdbaths and any containers that hold water at least once a week from September, because mosquitoes in Capri breed in these as well as in the wetlands. Mesh on bedroom windows does the rest.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on the size of the property, how many rooms and cupboards are affected, and whether the roof space needs to be treated. Easy access to the ceiling void keeps the job simpler, while a home with lots of built-in cupboards and shelves takes more time. Offices, archives and storerooms with large amounts of paper are quoted separately, and every quote is free.

Moving books into sealed boxes and running a dehumidifier will help more than any spray from the shop. DIY sprays rarely reach the roof space or wall voids where the main population lives. If you are seeing them in several rooms or dropping from the ceiling, get the roof space treated professionally.

Frequently asked questions

Can fishmoths damage clothes?

They can graze cotton, linen, silk and starched fabrics, particularly items stored for long periods in damp cupboards. They are less of a problem on synthetics.

Do veld fires near Capri bring rodents into homes?

Yes, after a fire on the slopes, mice and rats lose cover and food and move downhill into gardens and garages. A quick inspection and some perimeter baiting soon after a fire can head off an infestation.

Do you come out to Capri Village for fishmoth control?

Yes. Capri Village is part of our regular South Peninsula route, along with Noordhoek, Sun Valley, Kommetjie, Masiphumelele. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Why are mosquitoes so bad in Capri in spring?

The wetlands on the valley floor fill up over winter and warm up in spring, which is perfect for mosquito breeding. Clearing standing water in the garden and fitting window mesh is the most practical defence.

Why are fishmoths falling from my ceiling?

That usually means there is a population in the roof space. Treating the ceiling void with a dust is the most effective way to deal with it.

Do fishmoths mean I have damp?

Often, yes. Common silverfish in particular need high humidity, so seeing them regularly in one room is a good reason to check for leaks or poor ventilation.

If fishmoths are getting into your books, papers or linen in Capri Village, we are glad to come and take a look.
