Lotus River takes its name from the canal that runs through it towards Zeekoevlei, and that waterway is a big part of the pest picture here. It's a busy residential area with family homes, backyard rooms and small businesses side by side.
Crawling insects in Lotus River: what we see
German cockroaches are common in kitchens and in small food shops. Ants and crickets come up from the sandy yards in summer.
Most homes are free-standing or semi-detached brick houses on small stands, many with a Wendy house or extra room in the yard. Backyard structures and storerooms are often where rodents nest first. Small shops and home businesses along the main roads keep food on the premises, which draws cockroaches and mice.
The Lotus River canal and the nearby Zeekoevlei hold water for much of the year, with reeds along the banks. In heavy winter rain the low-lying streets can flood, and the high water table on the Cape Flats sand keeps yards damp. Summer brings the South-Easter and warm, still evenings near the water.
Rats along the canal are the most common problem, followed by German cockroaches in kitchens. Mosquitoes and midges breed in the reeds and slow water. Fleas and ants are regular summer calls.
A note from the field
Crickets are not dangerous to children or pets, so there is no need to panic or use strong products indoors. A perimeter treatment keeps the products outside, away from living areas.
Reducing crickets on a property can also reduce spiders and scorpions, which come in to hunt them. It is one of those cases where solving one small problem helps with another.
How to tell you have a problem
- Raised, soft ridges and tunnels in the lawn, especially after watering.
- Small chewed holes in clothing, curtains or paper stored in damp places.
- Crickets sheltering in the garage, under appliances or behind skirting boards.
- Patches of grass that brown and die, and lift easily because the roots have been cut.
- Loud chirping at night that stops as soon as you walk towards it.
What happens when we come out
Indoors, we focus on finding where the crickets are coming in and hiding, then apply a residual treatment to entry points, door thresholds, garage edges and other hiding spots. Granular baits can be used around the perimeter of the house to reduce numbers before they reach the walls. For mole crickets, the lawn is treated with a targeted product and watered in so it reaches the tunnels, and timing matters because young mole crickets near the surface are easier to control. We use the least-toxic effective option and avoid spraying open living areas.
- Identify the cricket
Field crickets, house crickets and mole crickets behave differently and need different treatments.
- Locate entry and shelter
We look at door gaps, garage doors, airbricks and cluttered areas where crickets hide during the day.
- Treat the perimeter
A residual barrier and, where useful, granular bait go around the outside of the house and entry points.
- Treat the lawn
For mole crickets, the affected areas of lawn are treated and watered in so the product reaches the tunnels.
- Report and advice
You get a post-treatment report with tips on lighting, sealing and garden habits that reduce numbers.
Prevention that actually works
- Fit brush strips under exterior doors and garage doors so crickets cannot walk straight in.
- Clear leaf litter, mulch, firewood and garden rubbish away from the walls of the house.
- Seal cracks in walls and around window frames, and check that airbricks have intact mesh.
- Swap bright white outside lights for yellow or warm-coloured bulbs, which attract fewer insects.
- Water the lawn deeply but less often, as constantly damp soil suits mole crickets.
How much will it cost?
The cost depends on whether it is an indoor nuisance, a lawn problem or both, and on the size of the property and garden. A large lawn with widespread mole cricket damage takes more product and time than a perimeter treatment for a house. Follow-up treatments, if needed to catch a second generation, are included in a free quote upfront.
One cricket behind the fridge is a job for a torch and a glass, not a pest control company. If crickets keep coming in night after night, or your lawn is lifting with tunnels, a professional perimeter or lawn treatment will save you a lot of frustration. Buying lawn insecticide and guessing the timing often wastes money.
Cricket Control questions from Lotus River
Are the rats in Lotus River coming from the canal?
Many of them are. The reeds and banks along the canal shelter rats, and they spread into nearby yards, especially after heavy rain fills their burrows.
Why are the mosquitoes so bad near Zeekoevlei?
Still water and reed beds are ideal breeding spots, and Zeekoevlei and the canal have plenty of both. Clearing standing water at home and treating shady resting spots in your garden helps reduce bites.
Do you come out to Lotus River for cricket control?
Yes. Lotus River is part of our regular Cape Flats route, along with Grassy Park, Ottery, Pelican Park, Philippi. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
Are crickets harmful?
No, crickets do not bite people or carry disease to any real extent. The problems are noise, minor damage to fabric and paper, and lawn damage from mole crickets.
What is damaging my lawn with tunnels?
If you see raised ridges and spongy patches with dying grass, mole crickets are a likely cause. Flood a patch with soapy water and they often come to the surface, which confirms it.
Is the lawn treatment safe for pets?
We use a targeted product and water it in. Keep pets off the treated area until it has dried, and we will give you specific guidance on the day.
