Gardens takes its name from the Company's Garden, and the squirrels in there have been raising families in neighbouring roofs for generations. Add the restaurants on Kloof Street, old Victorian semis and a lot of flats, and you get a busy mix of pest work.

The local picture in Gardens

German cockroaches in restaurants and flats, Argentine ants in summer and fishmoths in old wooden cupboards and bookshelves are the main ones.

Victorian and Edwardian semis with corrugated iron roofs, broekie lace stoeps and wooden floors sit alongside blocks of flats and modern apartments. Old houses have hollow walls and suspended floors, so mice and rats can move through without being seen. Restaurants, coffee shops and bars along Kloof Street sit below residential flats. Many homes are rentals with frequent turnover.

Gardens lies on the lower slopes below Table Mountain, between the city centre and Kloof Nek. The Company's Garden and its old trees are a squirrel haven. Winter rain runs down from the mountain, and in summer the South-Easter tumbles down off the mountain into the streets.

Squirrels and roof rats in ceilings are the classic call. German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens and the flats above them come next, followed by Argentine ants and fishmoths in the old houses.

Something most people miss

When a technician deals with a cricket complaint, the first thing they check is the outside lighting and the garage door seal. Fixing those two things often makes more difference than the treatment itself.

Mole crickets are often blamed on lawn grubs or dry patches, and people keep watering a lawn that is actually being cut from below. The soap water test is a cheap way to find out.

How to tell you have a problem

  1. Birds and hadedas probing the lawn intensively, which is often a sign of mole crickets or other insects underneath.
  2. Small chewed holes in clothing, curtains or paper stored in damp places.
  3. Large numbers of crickets attracted to outside lights on warm nights.
  4. Loud chirping at night that stops as soon as you walk towards it.
  5. Crickets sheltering in the garage, under appliances or behind skirting boards.

How the treatment works

Indoors, we focus on finding where the crickets are coming in and hiding, then apply a residual treatment to entry points, door thresholds, garage edges and other hiding spots. Granular baits can be used around the perimeter of the house to reduce numbers before they reach the walls. For mole crickets, the lawn is treated with a targeted product and watered in so it reaches the tunnels, and timing matters because young mole crickets near the surface are easier to control. We use the least-toxic effective option and avoid spraying open living areas.

  1. Identify the cricket

Field crickets, house crickets and mole crickets behave differently and need different treatments.

  2. Locate entry and shelter

We look at door gaps, garage doors, airbricks and cluttered areas where crickets hide during the day.

  3. Treat the perimeter

A residual barrier and, where useful, granular bait go around the outside of the house and entry points.

  4. Treat the lawn

For mole crickets, the affected areas of lawn are treated and watered in so the product reaches the tunnels.

  5. Report and advice

You get a post-treatment report with tips on lighting, sealing and garden habits that reduce numbers.

Prevention that actually works

  • Clear leaf litter, mulch, firewood and garden rubbish away from the walls of the house.
  • Keep the garage and storeroom tidy and dry, since crickets love damp cardboard and clutter.
  • Swap bright white outside lights for yellow or warm-coloured bulbs, which attract fewer insects.
  • Water the lawn deeply but less often, as constantly damp soil suits mole crickets.
  • Seal cracks in walls and around window frames, and check that airbricks have intact mesh.
Local tip for GardensCheck the fascia boards and the gaps between corrugated roof sheets and the walls of older homes. Squirrels and rats usually get in there, and a strip of mesh keeps them out.

Pricing, honestly

The cost depends on whether it is an indoor nuisance, a lawn problem or both, and on the size of the property and garden. A large lawn with widespread mole cricket damage takes more product and time than a perimeter treatment for a house. Follow-up treatments, if needed to catch a second generation, are included in a free quote upfront.

Field crickets are loudest and most noticeable in the warm months from late spring through summer. They often move indoors in autumn as the nights cool down and the first rains arrive. Mole cricket damage to lawns shows up most in spring and summer when they are active near the surface.

Cricket Control questions from Gardens

Do crickets attract other pests?

Yes, large numbers of crickets can draw in spiders, geckos and sometimes scorpions, which feed on them. Reducing crickets often reduces those too.

Do you come out to Gardens for cricket control?

Yes. Gardens is part of our regular City Bowl & Atlantic Seaboard route, along with Tamboerskloof, Oranjezicht, Vredehoek, Higgovale. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Are crickets harmful?

No, crickets do not bite people or carry disease to any real extent. The problems are noise, minor damage to fabric and paper, and lawn damage from mole crickets.

Are the squirrels in my Gardens roof from the Company's Garden?

Very likely. Grey squirrels travel from the garden and the trees along the streets into roofs, often through gaps at the fascia. Sealing those gaps once the roof is empty is the lasting fix.

What is damaging my lawn with tunnels?

If you see raised ridges and spongy patches with dying grass, mole crickets are a likely cause. Flood a patch with soapy water and they often come to the surface, which confirms it.

Do old Victorian houses in Gardens have more borer?

They often do, because many still have original timber floors and roof structures. A beetle certificate inspection will show whether there is active infestation that needs treatment.
