Lansdowne is a busy, settled suburb where Lansdowne Road and Jan Smuts Drive bring a steady stream of traffic and trade. Shops, mosques, schools and family homes all sit close together, so pest pressure is a mix of household and commercial.

Crawling insects in Lansdowne: what we see

German cockroaches love the warm motors under fridges and in takeaway kitchens. Ants and crickets come up from the sandy gardens in summer.

The housing is mostly single-storey brick homes and semi-detached houses on modest stands, many extended over the years with extra rooms at the back. Every add-on creates new joins in the roof and walls, and those gaps are where mice and cockroaches get in. Along the main roads, shops with flats above share walls and ceilings, which lets rodents travel between them.

It's flat Cape Flats country with sandy soil that drains fast in summer and stays soggy in a wet winter. Stormwater canals run through the wider area and carry water most of the rainy season. Strong South-Easter winds in summer blow litter into corners and against fences, giving rodents cover.

House mice and rats are the most common call, followed by German cockroaches in kitchens and shops. Ants march in every summer. Flies are a nuisance near takeaways and around bins.

A note from the field

A technician checking for crawling insects will open the bottom panel of the dishwasher, look behind the fridge motor and pull out the drawer under the oven. Those warm, greasy spots tell us more than any number of sightings on the floor.

Fishmoths are often a sign of damp more than dirt. If you keep finding them in the same bathroom or cupboard, it is worth checking for a slow leak or poor ventilation.

Signs to look for

  1. There is a faint musty, oily smell in a cupboard that has not been opened for a while.
  2. Cockroaches dart away when you switch on the kitchen or bathroom light at night.
  3. Fishmoths drop out of books, boxes or linen cupboards when you move them.
  4. Ant trails run from a crack in the floor or wall to the dog bowl, sugar bowl or dishwasher.
  5. Dead insects collect on window sills, in light fittings or along the bottom of the garage door.
  6. Brown oval egg cases are tucked into hinges, under drawers or behind the stove.

How the treatment works

Crawling insects walk through treated areas and carry baits back to their nests, which is exactly why baits and dusts work so well on them. We use gel baits in cracks and hinges for cockroaches and slow-acting ant baits that the workers take home to the queen. Insect growth regulators stop young cockroaches from maturing and breeding, which matters for German cockroaches that multiply fast. Residual sprays are applied as a barrier along entry points, door thresholds and drain areas rather than across open floors. Dusts go into wall voids, ceiling spaces and plug points where liquids should not be used.

Keeping them out afterwards

  • Check second-hand furniture, appliances and cardboard boxes before bringing them inside, as German cockroaches often move house this way.
  • Do not leave dishes in the sink overnight, since a wet sink is a feeding station for cockroaches.
  • Move firewood, compost and piles of bricks away from the house walls.
  • Put drain covers or mesh over floor drains and keep the water traps full, especially in guest bathrooms that are seldom used.
  • Seal gaps under exterior doors with a brush strip, because most crawling insects simply walk in.
Local tip for LansdowneIf your house has been extended, go up into the ceiling with a torch and look where the old roof meets the new one. That join is the most common entry point for mice in Lansdowne, and a bit of mesh or sealant closes it off.

How much will it cost?

Cost is driven by the species and how established the infestation is, with German cockroaches in a busy kitchen usually needing more work than a one-off ant trail. The size of the property, the number of units or rooms affected, and access to roof spaces and drains also matter. Where a follow-up treatment is needed to catch hatching insects, or where a business wants a regular service contract, we build that into a free quote upfront.

The first heavy rains in late autumn and winter push ants, cockroaches, crickets and millipedes indoors in large numbers. Summer heat brings American cockroaches out of drains and sends ants foraging hard for water. German cockroaches and fishmoths do not care much about the season because they live inside heated buildings all year.

Questions we get asked in Lansdowne

Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?

Spraying kills the foragers but leaves the queen and the nest untouched. Baits work better because the workers carry the product back and share it with the colony.

Do you treat shops and restaurants on Lansdowne Road?

Yes. We do cockroach, rodent and fly control for food businesses and provide a post-treatment report you can keep on file.

Why do I hear mice in my ceiling but never see them in the house?

They are probably nesting in the roof space and feeding outside or in the kitchen at night. In Lansdowne this often happens where an extension joins the original roof, so we start our inspection there.

Is the treatment safe around food?

We use gel baits and targeted applications in cracks rather than spraying food areas. Food should be covered or put away during treatment, and we will explain what to wipe down afterwards.

Do you come out to Lansdowne for crawling insect control?

Yes. Lansdowne is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Crawford, Kenwyn, Rondebosch East, Athlone. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Will one treatment get rid of cockroaches?

For American cockroaches it often will. German cockroaches usually need a follow-up because their egg cases are protected and hatch after the first treatment.

We cover Lansdowne and nearby suburbs, with evening and weekend visits available on request.
