Kensington has the feel of an old railway suburb, with modest homes on small plots, corner shops and warehouses never far away. Our work here is mostly rats, cockroaches and pigeons, and how bad each one gets depends a lot on how close you are to the industrial side.
Kensington: what drives crawling insects here
German cockroaches breed in kitchens and corner shops and move through shared walls. American cockroaches come up through old drains on hot nights.
Rows of older semi-detached and free-standing houses make up most of the suburb, many with pitched corrugated roofs and backyard rooms built over time. Some are a hundred years old in parts, with timber floors over shallow voids. Factories, workshops and storage units nearby add bigger buildings with loading bays, where rats are never short of a meal.
Kensington sits on flat land between Maitland and the Ndabeni and Epping industrial areas, close to the railway lines that run out of the city. There is little natural vegetation, so pests rely on what people leave around. Winter stormwater can back up in older drains, and in summer litter blows along the railway reserve.
Signs to look for
- Cockroaches dart away when you switch on the kitchen or bathroom light at night.
- Dead insects collect on window sills, in light fittings or along the bottom of the garage door.
- There is a faint musty, oily smell in a cupboard that has not been opened for a while.
- Ant trails run from a crack in the floor or wall to the dog bowl, sugar bowl or dishwasher.
- Crickets chirp loudly from inside the house at night but go quiet when you get close.
Cockroaches move between drains, bins and food surfaces and can spread bacteria that cause stomach upsets. Their droppings and shed skins are a recognised trigger for allergies and asthma. Fishmoths damage paper, documents, photographs and starched fabrics, which matters a lot in offices, schools and archives. In food premises, a crawling insect sighting by a customer or an inspector can do lasting damage to a business's reputation.
A note from the field
One of the most common mistakes is spraying insecticide over ant bait. It contaminates the bait and the ants stop feeding on it, so the colony survives.
In blocks of flats, body corporates get far better value from a scheduled treatment of all units and shared drains than from individual owners treating one flat at a time.
What happens when we come out
Crawling insects walk through treated areas and carry baits back to their nests, which is exactly why baits and dusts work so well on them. We use gel baits in cracks and hinges for cockroaches and slow-acting ant baits that the workers take home to the queen. Insect growth regulators stop young cockroaches from maturing and breeding, which matters for German cockroaches that multiply fast. Residual sprays are applied as a barrier along entry points, door thresholds and drain areas rather than across open floors. Dusts go into wall voids, ceiling spaces and plug points where liquids should not be used.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Check second-hand furniture, appliances and cardboard boxes before bringing them inside, as German cockroaches often move house this way.
- Do not leave dishes in the sink overnight, since a wet sink is a feeding station for cockroaches.
- Move firewood, compost and piles of bricks away from the house walls.
- Put drain covers or mesh over floor drains and keep the water traps full, especially in guest bathrooms that are seldom used.
- Seal gaps under exterior doors with a brush strip, because most crawling insects simply walk in.
What affects the price
Cost is driven by the species and how established the infestation is, with German cockroaches in a busy kitchen usually needing more work than a one-off ant trail. The size of the property, the number of units or rooms affected, and access to roof spaces and drains also matter. Where a follow-up treatment is needed to catch hatching insects, or where a business wants a regular service contract, we build that into a free quote upfront.
Shop-bought ant baits can handle a small, new trail and are worth a try. For cockroaches, especially German cockroaches, DIY sprays usually make things worse by scattering them and killing only the adults while the egg cases hatch. In flats and food businesses, I would not bother with DIY at all.
Crawling Insect Control questions from Kensington
Do you come out to Kensington for crawling insect control?
Yes. Kensington is part of our regular Northern Suburbs route, along with Maitland, Ndabeni, Pinelands, Epping. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.
What counts as a crawling insect?
Anything that mainly walks rather than flies: cockroaches, ants, fishmoths, crickets, earwigs, millipedes and scorpions. They hide in cracks and voids, which is why they are treated with baits, dusts and barriers.
How do I stop pigeons nesting under my solar panels?
Mesh around the edge of the panels stops pigeons getting underneath without damaging the system. We can fit it and clear out existing nests.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?
For a cockroach treatment, it helps to clear the cupboards under the sink and around the stove so the technician can reach the cracks. We will tell you exactly what to move when you book.
Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?
Spraying kills the foragers but leaves the queen and the nest untouched. Baits work better because the workers carry the product back and share it with the colony.
Do rats in Kensington come from the Ndabeni and Epping industrial areas?
Some do. Warehouses and railway land give rats food and shelter, and they move into homes nearby, so we bait along the boundaries and seal entry points.
