Athlone is busy, built-up and full of small businesses, so a lot of our work here is about stopping pests moving between homes, shops and takeaways that share the same blocks. The Black River and the old open land around the wastewater works on the Pinelands side give rodents and mosquitoes somewhere to breed just outside the residential streets.
General pest control in Athlone: what we see
German cockroaches dominate in kitchens of flats and corner shops, while the bigger American cockroaches live in sewer lines and come up through floor traps. Fishmoths turn up in older homes with damp built-in cupboards.
The ground is flat Cape Flats sand with a fairly high water table, so winter rain sits in low spots and stormwater drains run full. The Black River runs along the north-western edge before joining the Liesbeek near the Raapenberg wetland. The South-Easter blows hard through summer and pushes flies and litter into sheltered yards.
Most homes are older semi-detached and freestanding brick houses, plus council flats in places like Kewtown and Bridgetown. Many have been extended at the back over the years, and those join-ups between old and new roofs leave gaps that rats and mice use. In the flat blocks, German cockroaches travel along shared plumbing ducts, so treating one unit on its own rarely holds for long.
Rats are the main complaint, especially near Klipfontein Road businesses and homes close to the river. German cockroaches are a constant in flats and food shops, and Argentine ants come inside in numbers when the first winter rains arrive. Summer brings flies and mosquitoes, with the worst mosquito pressure in houses closest to the river and vlei edges.
From the technician
On farms and packhouses, the risk to watch is rodents moving in from the fields after harvest or after the first heavy rains. Timing extra visits for that window saves a lot of trouble.
Tell-tale signs
- You handle, store or serve food and need documented pest control for audits or inspections.
- You manage several units or sites and want one provider and one set of records.
- Staff or customers have reported sightings and you need a documented response.
- You keep getting once-off call-outs for the same pest at the same site.
- Your premises back onto open land, a river or a canal where rodents have a constant source.
What happens when we come out
We start with a site survey to map risk areas, entry points, waste handling and storage, then design a programme around it. Rodent control relies on numbered tamper-resistant bait stations and traps placed on a site plan, checked and logged at every visit. Insects are managed with gel baits, insect growth regulators and targeted residual treatments, with fly control units where appropriate in food areas. Every visit produces a written report noting activity, products used and any proofing or hygiene issues for your team to fix. Least-toxic options come first, which matters in kitchens and around food handling.

Stopping a repeat visit
- Act on the proofing and hygiene notes in each service report, since many repeat issues come from the same unfixed gap.
- Rotate dry stock first in, first out to stop stored product pests settling in old stock.
- Keep waste areas clean and bins lidded, especially in summer when flies breed in days.
- Train staff to log sightings with the date, time and place, which makes each service more targeted.
- Keep loading bay doors and roller shutters closed when not in use, as they are the main rodent entry point in warehouses.
Pricing, honestly
Contract pricing depends on the size of the site, the type of business and the level of risk, so a restaurant kitchen is priced differently from an office block. The number of bait stations, monitors and fly units, and how often we visit, are the main factors. Multi-site contracts and longer agreements are quoted on their own terms after a site survey.
A good contract covers the whole year, but the focus shifts with Cape Town's seasons. Rodent pressure rises from May as the rain arrives and sites near open ground see more activity. Flies and cockroaches peak from November to March, which is when food businesses most often need extra visits.
Frequently asked questions
Do the rats in Athlone come from the Black River?
Some do, especially in streets closest to the river and the open land around the treatment works. Most, though, are living in the sand along boundary walls and under outbuildings, so we bait and seal at the house as well as along the river side.
Why do cockroaches keep coming back in my Athlone flat?
In the council flat blocks, German cockroaches move through shared plumbing ducts and walls, so neighbouring units keep re-infesting each other. Treating the whole block, or at least the units on either side, gives a far longer result.
Is there a guarantee on contract treatments?
Treatments carry a minimum 3-month guarantee, and on a contract any activity between visits is dealt with as part of the service.
