Bergvliet Bird Mite Control

Bird mites are tiny, but they cause a lot of misery in Bergvliet homes every spring. Bird mites are tiny parasites that live in the nests of pigeons, mynas, sparrows and starlings, and when the chicks leave or the nest is abandoned, they wander into the house looking for a new host and bite people. We find and remove the nest, treat the roof void, gutters and affected rooms, and close the gaps so birds cannot nest there again.

Bergvliet is a quiet, leafy family suburb with big gardens, oak and pine trees and greenbelts running along its streams. Pest calls here lean towards garden-related problems coming indoors, such as rats, ants, wasps and the odd bird problem.

Biting insects in Bergvliet: what we see

Flea calls here usually trace back to a pet that spends time under the deck or in the greenbelt. Bed bugs are uncommon and nearly always come home in luggage.

Bergvliet sits between Constantia and Tokai, close to the forest and mountain slopes. Small streams run through greenbelts towards the Diep River, and winter rain keeps gardens damp. Big trees drop seeds and nuts that feed rodents and grey squirrels.

Worth knowing

Bird nests also feed carpet beetles and clothes moths, so a house with an old nest in the roof can end up with damaged rugs and clothing even after the mites are gone.

The first thing a technician checks is the roofline from outside. Droppings on the walls, feathers in the gutters and birds going in and out of a gap tell us where to look inside.

What gives them away

  1. A prickling, crawling sensation on the skin, often at night or while sitting near a particular wall or window.
  2. Tiny moving specks on window sills, bedding, white walls or the bathroom basin, especially near ceilings and light fittings.
  3. Symptoms that ease when you leave the house for a few days and return when you come back.
  4. Small itchy red bites on the arms, neck or torso that appear after birds have stopped using a nest.
  5. Birds seen flying in and out of the roof, gutters or eaves during the spring and early summer.

How the treatment works

The single most important step is finding and removing the nest, because treating the bedroom while the source remains in the roof only gives temporary relief. Our technician goes into the roof void and around the eaves and gutters, bags and removes nesting material, and treats the nest site and surrounding timbers with a residual spray or insecticidal dust. Inside, we treat the affected rooms with a light residual spray along skirting, window frames, light fittings and around ceiling penetrations where the mites come through. We then recommend or carry out bird proofing, such as closing gaps with mesh or fitting spikes or netting, so new birds cannot move into the same spot. Because a few mites may emerge in the days after, we check back if symptoms continue.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Watch your roofline in spring; if you see pigeons or mynas going in and out of a gap, have it dealt with before they lay eggs.
  • Check air conditioning units, satellite dishes and solar panels, which create sheltered ledges birds love.
  • Keep gutters clean so birds are not encouraged to build nests in them.
  • Keep chicken coops well away from the house and treat them for mites regularly if you keep poultry.
  • Do not feed pigeons near the house, as a reliable food supply keeps them nesting on your roof.
Local tip for BergvlietTrim tree branches back at least a metre from the roof, because roof rats and squirrels in Bergvliet use them to get onto the roof. Store bird seed and dog food in sealed bins in the garage.

How much will it cost?

The price depends mainly on how many nests there are, how easy the roof void and eaves are to get into, and how many rooms need treating inside. Bird proofing work such as mesh or spikes is quoted separately depending on the length of roofline and the materials needed. We give a free quote after inspection, and photos of the roofline sent via WhatsApp help us prepare.

In Cape Town, pigeons can breed almost all year, but mynas, sparrows and starlings nest most heavily from late winter through spring and early summer. Bird mite complaints usually peak a few weeks after the chicks leave the nest, which tends to be in spring and early summer. Warm weather also speeds up the mites' activity, so problems are most noticeable in the hotter months.

Questions we get asked in Bergvliet

Do you come out to Bergvliet for bird mite control?

Yes. Bergvliet is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Meadowridge, Diep River, Tokai, Kirstenhof. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

How do I know it is bird mites and not bed bugs?

Bird mites are tiny and fast and are often seen near windows and ceilings, while bed bugs are larger and hide in beds. Recent bird activity on the roof is a strong clue, and we can check both.

Can bird mites live on me?

No, they cannot complete their life cycle on people and will die off within a few weeks without a bird host. They will keep biting while they search, which is why removing the nest is so important.

Can you deal with Egyptian geese on my Bergvliet lawn?

We focus on making the garden less attractive to them, with deterrents around the pool, netting where practical and removing easy food like spilt pet food. The aim is to move them on, not to harm them.

Is it safe to stay in the house?

Yes, you can stay. We will ask you to keep out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry, usually for a few hours.

Do the oak trees in Bergvliet attract rats and squirrels?

They do, since acorns and seeds are food and the branches give easy access to roofs. Trimming branches and sealing roof gaps keeps them out of your ceiling.
