Bed Bug Removal for Steenberg homes and businesses

In the heat of a Steenberg summer, bed bug eggs hatch faster, which makes the follow-up visit essential. Once bed bugs are confirmed, getting rid of them is a practical job that depends as much on how the room is prepared as on what we spray. We guide you through preparing the bedrooms, treat the beds, furniture and hiding places on the day, and come back to finish off the hatchlings so your Cape Town home is properly clear.

Steenberg covers two quite different places: the busy residential area near Retreat and Lavender Hill, and the wine estate and golf course on the mountain side. We work across both, and the pest problems differ a lot between them.

Steenberg: what drives biting insects here

Fleas and bed bugs are common in denser housing where rooms are shared. Treating all rooms together gets the best result.

The Steenberg mountain rises behind the area as part of Table Mountain National Park, with vineyards on its lower slopes. Lower down, the sandy Cape Flats ground and wetlands toward Zeekoevlei and Princess Vlei bring a high water table. Winters are wet, summers hot and windy.

Near the railway and Steenberg station, homes are mainly older council houses, semis and flats, often with backyard rooms. Closer to the mountain, the estate side has newer, larger homes in security developments. Dense housing makes it easy for rodents and cockroaches to spread, while large estate homes deal more with mountain-edge pests. Shops and taxi ranks along the main roads add food sources.

Rats and German cockroaches dominate in the denser areas, while mice, ants and scorpions are more typical on the estate side. Mosquitoes and fleas are common in summer.

A note from the field

In blocks of flats, treating one unit while the neighbours ignore their problem is a recipe for reinfestation. Body corporates and landlords get far better results when adjoining units are inspected at the same time.

What gives them away

  1. Bed bugs have already been confirmed by an inspection or a clear photo of the insect.
  2. Bugs have started appearing in a second bedroom or on the couch where someone moved to sleep.
  3. A neighbouring flat or guest room has reported bed bugs and you are now seeing bites.
  4. Clusters of dark droppings and shed skins are building up in the joints of the bed base.

How the treatment works

The day before, you strip the beds and hot-wash and tumble-dry all bedding, curtains and clothes from the affected rooms, then bag them in sealed plastic until treatment is done. We pull the bed away from the wall, stand up the mattress and base and treat every seam, joint, screw hole, headboard and bedside drawer with a residual insecticide, followed by a fine insecticidal dust in voids, behind skirting and in plug point surrounds where needed. Mattresses that are in good condition are treated and then sealed in a bed bug-proof encasement rather than thrown out. We place interceptor monitors under the bed legs and return after about two weeks to treat again and catch nymphs that hatched from eggs. You get a written report after each visit.

Stopping a repeat visit

  • Avoid store-bought foggers during and after treatment, as they push bugs into wall voids and neighbouring rooms.
  • Do not move to another bed or the couch during treatment; keep sleeping in the treated bed so bugs come out and contact the product.
  • Leave the mattress encasement on for at least a year, because adult bed bugs can survive a long time without feeding.
  • Keep washed clothes and bedding sealed in bags until the final visit is done, and only unpack what you need.
  • Do not drag infested furniture outside unwrapped; wrap it in plastic first or ask us before moving it.
Local tip for SteenbergIf you're near the Steenberg railway line, block gaps under your boundary wall and gate with concrete or mesh. Rats travel along the rail reserve and come in at ground level.

What affects the price

The price depends on the number of rooms and beds being treated, how much furniture is involved and how severe the infestation is. Rooms that are well prepared are quicker and more effective to treat, which can reduce the need for extra visits. The quote includes the follow-up visit, and we give it free after inspection or photos.

The preparation side is very much a do-it-yourself job and it decides whether treatment works, so take it seriously. Actually removing an established infestation yourself is hard, because the eggs survive most shop products and the bugs simply move deeper into the walls. Our honest view: do the washing and decluttering yourself and leave the treatment to someone who does it every week.

Questions we get asked in Steenberg

What do I do with clothes in the cupboard?

Wash and tumble-dry them on hot, then keep them sealed in bags until treatment is complete. Items that cannot be washed can often go in a hot tumble dryer for a cycle.

Do you service both sides of Steenberg?

Yes, we cover the residential area near Retreat and the estates on the mountain side. Treatments are tailored to each type of home.

Do you come out to Steenberg for bed bug removal?

Yes. Steenberg is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Retreat, Lavender Hill, Tokai, Kirstenhof. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

Why do you need to come back?

The eggs are protected and hatch over the next one to two weeks. The return visit kills those nymphs before they can breed.

Do I have to throw out my mattress?

Usually not. A mattress in good condition can be treated and sealed in an encasement; only badly torn or heavily infested ones may need replacing, and those must be wrapped before being removed.

Why do I find scorpions in my Steenberg estate home?

Homes near the mountain border fynbos and rocky ground where scorpions live. Sealing gaps under doors and clearing rock piles near the house helps.
