Bed Bug Removal for Lansdowne homes and businesses

Bagging, washing and tumble-drying is the unglamorous start of every bed bug removal we do in Lansdowne. Once bed bugs are confirmed, getting rid of them is a practical job that depends as much on how the room is prepared as on what we spray. We guide you through preparing the bedrooms, treat the beds, furniture and hiding places on the day, and come back to finish off the hatchlings so your Cape Town home is properly clear.

Lansdowne is a busy, settled suburb where Lansdowne Road and Jan Smuts Drive bring a steady stream of traffic and trade. Shops, mosques, schools and family homes all sit close together, so pest pressure is a mix of household and commercial.

The local picture in Lansdowne

Fleas are the usual problem in homes with dogs and cats. Bed bugs come in on second-hand furniture or after a stay away.

It's flat Cape Flats country with sandy soil that drains fast in summer and stays soggy in a wet winter. Stormwater canals run through the wider area and carry water most of the rainy season. Strong South-Easter winds in summer blow litter into corners and against fences, giving rodents cover.

Tell-tale signs

  1. Bites keep appearing even after you have washed all the bedding and sprayed with a shop product.
  2. Bugs have started appearing in a second bedroom or on the couch where someone moved to sleep.
  3. Clusters of dark droppings and shed skins are building up in the joints of the bed base.
  4. A neighbouring flat or guest room has reported bed bugs and you are now seeing bites.
  5. Bed bugs have already been confirmed by an inspection or a clear photo of the insect.

From the technician

Throwing out a mattress feels like progress, but carrying it through the house and down the stairs can drop bugs in every room along the way. Treating and encasing it is usually the better choice.

People expect a removal day to be one big spray and done. In reality it is a methodical job of taking beds apart, treating every joint and seam, and sealing mattresses so nothing can escape.

Our process, step by step

The day before, you strip the beds and hot-wash and tumble-dry all bedding, curtains and clothes from the affected rooms, then bag them in sealed plastic until treatment is done. We pull the bed away from the wall, stand up the mattress and base and treat every seam, joint, screw hole, headboard and bedside drawer with a residual insecticide, followed by a fine insecticidal dust in voids, behind skirting and in plug point surrounds where needed. Mattresses that are in good condition are treated and then sealed in a bed bug-proof encasement rather than thrown out. We place interceptor monitors under the bed legs and return after about two weeks to treat again and catch nymphs that hatched from eggs. You get a written report after each visit.

Prevention that actually works

  • Do not drag infested furniture outside unwrapped; wrap it in plastic first or ask us before moving it.
  • Avoid store-bought foggers during and after treatment, as they push bugs into wall voids and neighbouring rooms.
  • Keep the bed a few centimetres from the wall and bedding off the floor so the bugs have fewer routes up.
  • Do not move to another bed or the couch during treatment; keep sleeping in the treated bed so bugs come out and contact the product.
  • Leave the mattress encasement on for at least a year, because adult bed bugs can survive a long time without feeding.
Local tip for LansdowneIf your house has been extended, go up into the ceiling with a torch and look where the old roof meets the new one. That join is the most common entry point for mice in Lansdowne, and a bit of mesh or sealant closes it off.

Pricing, honestly

The price depends on the number of rooms and beds being treated, how much furniture is involved and how severe the infestation is. Rooms that are well prepared are quicker and more effective to treat, which can reduce the need for extra visits. The quote includes the follow-up visit, and we give it free after inspection or photos.

Removal work runs all year because bed bugs live indoors, but in Cape Town's hot summer months their eggs hatch and nymphs develop faster. That means the follow-up visit matters even more between December and March. Guest houses often schedule removal in the quieter winter months when rooms can be taken out of service.

Questions we get asked in Lansdowne

Why do you need to come back?

The eggs are protected and hatch over the next one to two weeks. The return visit kills those nymphs before they can breed.

Do you come out to Lansdowne for bed bug removal?

Yes. Lansdowne is part of our regular Southern Suburbs route, along with Crawford, Kenwyn, Rondebosch East, Athlone. Most bookings are done within about 48 hours, and after-hours visits can be arranged.

How long must we stay out of the room?

Typically a few hours until treated surfaces are dry. You can sleep in the room that night, and we actually want you to.

Will the smell linger?

The products we use are low-odour and any smell clears quickly once the room has been aired. Let us know about sensitivities so we can plan for them.

Why do I hear mice in my ceiling but never see them in the house?

They are probably nesting in the roof space and feeding outside or in the kitchen at night. In Lansdowne this often happens where an extension joins the original roof, so we start our inspection there.

Do you treat shops and restaurants on Lansdowne Road?

Yes. We do cockroach, rodent and fly control for food businesses and provide a post-treatment report you can keep on file.
