German Wasp (Vespula vulgaris/germanica)
These guys are the most common species found here in Rugby are are almost always responsible for Wasp Stings. They are very aggressive and may deliver multiple nasty stings. They are yellow and black with bands on them, markings depend on species. Adults are about 12mm – 17mm in length. These Wasps build large nests under roof tiles, windowsills and in cavity walls almost always near a quick exit. The colonies can be huge with up to 25 000 individuals. South African Paper Wasp (Polistes marginalis)
As their name suggests, this is the local species of Wasp, their colonies are significantly smaller and are seldom aggressive unless provoked. Adults are about 17mm long and have long narrow bodies. They are brown with black or cream bands on, color depends on location. Nests are commonly found in the same areas as European wasps but significantly smaller.
European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominula)
Also very common here in Rugby and treated by the Wasp Control Rugby experts, these guys are slightly larger than the German Wasps. They are less aggressive but will fearlessly defend their nest. Adults are Black and yellow with workers being about 15mm – 19mm in length. Nests made by them are a lot like out South African Paper Wasp just with a greater number per nest.
